【Weekly Topic 2025.08.03】Learning English Through Music: Helpful or Not?

1楼 啊啊是谁都对 2025-8-3 13:26

Introduction:

Hey everyone! Welcome to this week's club discussion. We're diving into a popular method many of us use: learning English through music! Listening to songs in English is fun and everywhere, but does it actually help us improve our language skills? Let's share our experiences, opinions, and tips on this topic.

To get the conversation started, please consider these questions:

1.  Do you believe listening to English songs is an effective way to learn English? Why or why not?

2.  What are the main benefits you get (or think you could get) from learning English through music? (e.g., vocabulary, pronunciation, listening skills, understanding culture/slang, motivation)

3.  What are the biggest challenges or downsides you've faced (or can think of) when trying to learn this way? (e.g., fast singing, unclear lyrics, slang, misheard words, focusing only on the tune)

4.  Can you share an example? Has a specific English song ever taught you a useful new word, phrase, or helped improve your pronunciation? Tell us about it!

I don't listen to English song s very often. In my opinion, I can remember new words much more easily and clearly than that through ordinary ways, but I am easy to make some mistakes! For example, I misremember the usage of "long for" to "be long for" after listening to a English song owing to singer's blurred pronunciation.
啊啊是谁都对Maybe words have changed accroding to the tune of the song.

I don't think "Learning English Through Music" is a very efficient method, I only think it has an auxiliary function

I think it can help me to understand the songs I like better and learn some new words passingly

The first thing is I cannot always find English songs that meet my palette

For many English songs I cannot hear the lyrics very clearly and I must find lyrics in the internet. And for some unpopular songs I cannot find the lyrics

At last, as you say, for many English songs I will only focus on the tune

Learning English through music exactly does sth.. We may not carefully listen to the exact words, but to appreciate the atmosphere music itself creates. Some of you may ask "It seems useless and I can’t pronounce any of them after listening. It may only be one side. On the other hand, if you are lost in it, you will be familiar with the words. And if you are curious about what the words mean, you may finally find the meaning. Familiar and prounciation is the first step when we want to learn a new language. In this way, we can "learn" English without noticing yourself learning.
啊啊是谁都对Welp, maybe at least after repeated listenings, one can pronounce words without understading their meanings.

And a thing occurred to me: what would you do if you find too many words you don't know in a lyric and there is no Chinese translation?

star回复 @啊啊是谁都对:Well, in that situation, paying little attention to the exact words is a good choice. Or they will trouble you.
啊啊是谁都对回复 @star:Would you find the dictionary one by one then?
star回复 @啊啊是谁都对:I won’t. That’s crazy.
啊啊是谁都对回复 @star:So would you give up learning new words from that lyrics and then only enjoy the song?
star回复 @啊啊是谁都对:Yes
啊啊是谁都对回复 @star:That's also a good way to enjoy life.
star回复 @啊啊是谁都对:Thanks
啊啊是谁都对And would you like to become a fan and a member of English Club?
star回复 @啊啊是谁都对:Sure

1.  Do you believe listening to English songs is an effective way to learn English? Why or why not?

I don't think that's an effective way.

First, the lyrics are too short. That means a person needs to listen to so many songs. And usually the topics in songs are limited.

Second, some words' pronounciations are changed based on the song's rythems and the singer's accent. Unless accents learning are needed, it's quite easy to learn inaccurate accents.

Third, learning English via English songs has the risk of over-reliance. People are easy to notice the catchy tunes and ignore the lyrics. And sometimes "learning English via English songs" can be an excuse of avoiding learning English.

lizhenxuanMaybe not so severe?  To me English songs cause misunderstanding on words sometimes, but it does help me memorize new words.
For you first point, I think we don't need to boost vocabulary only via songs. By controlling the amount it can also be more effective than common ways like doing English homework.
啊啊是谁都对回复 @lizhenxuan:But it seems ineffective. I seldom could learn the words from that (maybe that's because I've learnt a lot before I listen to English songs.)

And by the way, English homework is usually designed to review or check one's English, not learn new things. When I learned English in senior high school, my English teacher usually asked us to recite the word list frist and then explained the important words at English classes.

lizhenxuan回复 @啊啊是谁都对:Er,  maybe my vocabulary is still poor, so English songs remain helpful.  As for homework,  I basically agreed with you. But I am often so careless that I make a number of mistakes in the homework, which causes my hate towards it. And some reading comprehension are a bit boring,  which makes me unwilling to take down new words,  which is a marked contrast to that when I learn via songs or other interesting things.
啊啊是谁都对回复 @lizhenxuan:Yeah. interesting things can trigger motivation.

(P.S.: the last sentence has too many ", which" structure, which is hard to read.

The benefit I get from English song is get to know a totally
different culture, which inspires me a lot. For example, there are many songs that woman sing are of power and encouragement in English, but Chinese women singers mostly sing songs about emotional matters; And they can express non-political-right thoughts which u hardly witness in Chinese freely; English world they do have various music style in popular, but we lack some variety.
啊啊是谁都对Yeah,that's right.

English songs can directly show English culture, especially mordern cultures.

lizhenxuanYour insight is very unique and inspirational!
