【Weekly Topic 2026.03.15】To Gift, or Not to Gift

1樓 圆环之理 2026-3-15 00:14

Introduction:

For thousands of years, the exchange of gifts has been a cornerstone of human connection. We've all experienced the joy of finding the "perfect" present, just as we've all felt the warmth of receiving one. Yet, this seemingly simple act is often fraught with unspoken expectations and quiet disappointments.

Think about it: You spend weeks crafting a personalized gift for a friend, only to be met with a polite smile that doesn't quite reach their eyes. Or perhaps you've been on the receiving end of a beautifully wrapped, expensive gift that, honestly, just isn't "you," and it eventually finds a new home at the back of a closet.

In a world where we can share moments and show we care every single day, is the ritual of gifting still essential? Or has it become a rigid social routine, an obligation stripped of genuine sentiment? Since we can never truly control how another person will feel about a gift, we must ask: Is the act of giving still necessary, or is it an outdated tradition in our modern world?

Let's unwrap this topic together. Join the conversation and share your perspective!

Discussion Questions:

Subquestion 1 (The Mismatch):

Has the "gift mismatch" phenomenon ever happened in your life—either as a disappointed giver or a less-than-thrilled receiver? How did you feel in that moment, and how did you handle it?

Subquestion 2 (Defining the Terms):

How would you personally define a "gift" and the act of "gifting"? In your view, what is the fundamental difference between giving a gift and simply sharing something with someone?

Subquestion 3 (The Joy of Giving):

What truly motivates you to give a gift to someone? It's often said that the giver experiences as much happiness as the receiver. Do you agree with this? What does that feeling of "giver's joy" feel like to you?

Subquestion 4 (The Gift Not Given):

Have you ever had an idea for a gift but decided against it? If so, what held you back? Was it a fear of being misunderstood, financial constraints, or something else entirely?

Subquestion 5 (A Look Back):

Let's travel back in time. What do you think motivated the very first person to give a present to another? Is the essence of gifting today fundamentally different from its origins, or are we still driven by the same basic human instincts?

Subquestion 6 (The Final Verdict):

Now, let's return to our core question. After considering all these points, what is your final verdict on gifting? Is it a beautiful, necessary part of the human experience, or a custom we should consider leaving behind?

I will feel disappointed and awkward. But soon I'll realise that we can't fully understand others' favorites so the mismatch of gifts are normal and acceptable. After all, it doesn't damage the friendship.

Yes I agree. I feel more than joyful when making or picking gifts for others though it's really grueling sometimes.

Subquestion 4 (The Gift Not Given):

Most because of lack of time or my forgetting it. In the other occasion, I found it too difficult to carry out, or the gift I made don't meet my expectation, and then I may stop.

The primary motivation, in my perspective, is to express love and care, and to strengthen the relationship. And it is still needed today.

Despite the disappointment and awkardesy brought by gift mismatch, gifting is still worthwhile. To lessen its "side effect", we can shift our focus from the receiver's reaction to gifts, to the expression of love behind gifts.
