He always stirs up troubles in daily life. He must explore his own way. This absolutely different with the figure in <Investiture of the Gods>

Besides that, Taiyi Zhenren is adapted to be an ugly, scruffy and fat character (The original Taiyi Zhenren is a Taoist priest with immortal feelings). The same thing also happens on Wuliang Xianweng. He is described to be an evil Taoist. He uses the monsters and the demons to produce elixirs

I think the director of this film does these adaptions in order to deliver the value [The goodness or evil doesn't depend on one's identity, but one's behaviour.
