【Weekly Topic 2024.10.12】Debating Authenticity: Man's First Duty

For this session of our English Corner, we're diving into a philosophical and deeply personal topic: "Do you agree or disagree with the statement that a man's first duty is to be himself?" We'll be exploring the concept of authenticity and its role in our lives.

This discussion will challenge participants to consider the importance of selfhood in a world that often demands conformity. We'll examine whether the pursuit of being true to oneself is a fundamental duty or an idealistic notion that can sometimes hinder personal and professional growth.

We invite you to share your thoughts on the balance between individuality and societal expectations. How does one navigate the pressures to conform while staying true to their core values and beliefs? Can being oneself always be the top priority, or are there times when it's necessary to suppress one's true nature for the greater good?

I think we should consider both individuality and social expectations. And sometimes perhaps we should make a compromise with the society

MAYBE I don't agree that.

Because becoming himself cannot become a duty of a man, let alone the first duty,

The society and others would not expect a man to become himself. And a man himself may want to be himself. But duty is for others, not for a man himself.

The duty in this sentence can be equal to "obligation". And what responsibility a man will shoulder if he act against that?
