Here is my writing of the sequel of Story Relay,  an activity held in English Club's 1st anniversary.

I am just a senior high student so my work is far from satisfying.

(This is the original part wrote by other members)

The old key felt colder than ice in Sarah's hand, its intricate grooves pressing into her palm. She hadn't expected to find anything behind the loose brick in her new apartment's fireplace, let alone a tarnished silver key tied to a faded tag with a single word: "Remember." Outside, the first anniversary fireworks for the city's founding began to explode, painting the night sky in brilliant shades of gold and purple. But as a particularly loud burst shook the windowpane, a faint sound, completely out of place, echoed from the locked door of the basement—a sound like someone gently knocking back.

Sarah felt frightened. She had never been into the basement because she could not open the door. Suddenly a voice occurred to her mind: "Run!"

She dashed to the door only to find it can't be opened.  Totally panic,  she banged the door with all her strength but in vain.

She realised the necessity to confront that,  thus trying to unlock the basement's door.  The door wasn't open until she tried the peculiar key she newly found,  which added to her perplexity and fear.

Standing in front of the basement, Sarah thought for a while and decided to take something before entering. She then went upstairs and brought a solid baseball bat in case that she would met something fierce.

(My writing is below)

With a flashlight and the baseball bat she ventured in cautious steps. The basement was very empty with almost nothing but old walls and floors remaining. A bit confused, she wondered whether she misheard when she sensed something flying to her; as the top baseball player at school she immediately wielded the bat with a huge swipe —— then the striking thing seemed to be forced back.

"Wow, thank you for saving me!"

A strange voice erupted, surprising Sarah.

Turning around, Sarah found a peculiar creature looking like a pink dog with long ears yet floating in air.

Twinkling at Sarah, the sprite said, "I have grappled with that bad guy for almost a century!" It pointed at the other sprite who was hit by Sarah and fell into collapse, "Ah! It's you that save me! And, I believe you are the very person I have waited for... Er,  seems you are confused?"

Standing still, Sarah couldn't believe her eyes. Sprite? Was she dreaming? "Perhaps I stayed up too late these days so that I have illusion now..." She murmured to herself.

"Hey! I'm not your illusion! Come to sense please!" The sprite kicked the poor girl, making her wince and draw backward. "Now you know you aren't in dream at all."

"Let me tell you a definite big secret: you humans once could forget something PROACTIVELY — it was an instinct processed by your ancestors. However, one day an evil magician deprived this ability, from then on people have been haunted by their past misery and distress, which should elude them originally. Fortunately, we have chance to reverse this, now."

"I suppose you had carried the key with yourself otherwise you couldn't come in. The key, called 'Key of Remembrance', is the very source of this disaster, and also the 'key' to go through it."

The sprite took out a box with a key hole. "Plunge the key into the hole and turn it around."

In a total shock, Sarah didn't think on it but did as the command. After that the box opened, yet it seemed nothing special happened except for the sprite, which was fading away little by little. "Now I have finished my mission. Farewell."

At the moment it vanished, the black sprite who was shocked in oblivion regained conscience. When seeing the opened box it cried: "How can it be opened! That's impossible!" Then it noticed Sarah, who was about to make an attack with her baseball bat.

"Wait! Tell me what happened first"

Sarah retold it.

"Haha, what a crumzy tale! The cunning thing only told you half of the truth. Proactively forgetting did once exist, but it was created rather than an instinct. And its birth time wasn't so distant — on October 23, 1984, a magician created it. He ever suffered a tragical fate, his kins having died, his friends betraying him, and diseases entangling him. Completely desperate, he desired to forget all of the misery. As a genuine magician unlike those who just know simple tricks, he made it; yet before he erased his memories, he wondered whether he should pass it to  the generations to come — so we two sprites were summoned. We fought against each other to determine the magic's future way. And you have known the result of this battle."

"However, the consequence of your act is still unknown. Maybe it isn't a bad thing to take the initiative of forgetting. Who knows? Goodbye. Wish you good luck."

When it was speaking, its body became transparent gradually, and soon disappeared like a wisp of smoke.

The End

Thank you for finishing reading it!

By the way I was inspired by a strange idea: is it good if we can forget proactively? Could you answer it?
