Hello, English Club members, and welcome to this week’s deep dive!

Let’s start with a hard truth: We are often our own harshest critics. We replay our mistakes, compare our behind-the-scenes to everyone else's highlight reels, and chase an elusive version of "perfection" that doesn't actually exist. But what if we took our foot off the gas?

This week, we are tackling Self-Acceptance.

Before we begin, let’s clear up a massive misconception: Self-acceptance is NOT resignation. It doesn't mean saying, "I am flawed, so I won't bother improving." Rather, it is the radical act of saying, "I see all of me—the strengths, the scars, and the quirks—and I acknowledge this as my starting point." It is the foundation upon which genuine confidence and authentic growth are built.

Over the next seven days, we’ll explore what it truly means to embrace our whole selves, free from the exhausting need for external validation. So, pull up a chair, leave your mask at the door, and let’s get real.

Subtopics & Discussion Questions

To guide our conversation, I have divided this theme into four key subtopics. Pick one that resonates with you, or answer all of them!

Subtopic 1: The "Self-Acceptance vs. Self-Improvement" Paradox
Many people worry that accepting themselves will make them lazy or stagnant. Let's dissect this.
• Do you believe self-acceptance kills motivation, or fuels it? Why?
• How do you personally distinguish between "accepting a flaw" and "making excuses" for it?
• Can you think of an area in your life where accepting your current ability actually helped you improve faster (e.g., learning a language, a sport, or a skill)?

Subtopic 2: The Social Media & Comparison Trap
Our modern world constantly sells us insecurities to fix.
• Does social media make it harder or easier to accept your natural self? Share a specific experience.
• Have you ever taken a "digital detox"? Did it change how you viewed your body, lifestyle, or achievements?
• How do we protect our self-worth when we see peers achieving things we still dream of?

Subtopic 3: Embracing the "Shadow" (The parts we hide)
We often accept our good traits easily, but struggle with our perceived weaknesses, past mistakes, or darker emotions.
• What is one part of your personality or past that you used to hide from others, but have since learned to accept? (Share only what you are comfortable with).
• How do you practice self-compassion when you feel embarrassed or ashamed of a decision you made?
• Is it possible to fully accept yourself without forgiving your past mistakes? Why or why not?

Subtopic 4: The Role of External Validation
To what extent do we need others to approve of us before we can approve of ourselves?
• Can true self-acceptance exist entirely independent of what others think, or is it human nature to need outside feedback?
• How does your cultural background (family values, societal norms) influence your journey toward self-acceptance?
• Imagine you woke up tomorrow and no one had any opinions about you whatsoever. Would you like the person you are? How would you behave differently?

It don't kill motivation but lead it to a health way.  It's inevitable that you will feel less motivated but you can find what you truly love.

A conditional standard of mine is refusing to do something I can redeem is making excuses,  while other conditions are not.

Actually I find it hard to deal with.  What I can do is telling myself "I have many things they don't have",  and waiting to forget.

It's impossible to distinguish the two.  The fact has only one, but there are as many kinds of explainations of facts as the number of person. Besides, these two belong to the way we explain the facts.

啊啊是谁都对: (P.S The standard of distinguishing them is "common sense". But "common sense" is not good enough to define.

No. I think for me it's of little use.

Can true self-acceptance exist entirely independent of what others think, or is it human nature to need outside feedback?

I think two concepts should be distinguished. The first is self-acceptance itself, which is easy to be independent of what others think if you base yourself on yourself. The second is "others think you have self-accpetance", which relys on "common sense", in other words, the standard that others set.

Subtopic 2: The Social Media & Comparison Trap
• Does social media make it harder or easier to accept your natural self? Share a specific experience.
: Easier—at least for me. I had few friends during middle school years. So I expanded my social circle via social media. It turned out that I succeeded in gaining some close friends with whom I can share my life.

• Have you ever taken a "digital detox"? Did it change how you viewed your body, lifestyle, or achievements?
: No. I think it won't work. Instead, trying to balance your own life may help, rather than cutting off all electronic devices completely.

• How do we protect our self-worth when we see peers achieving things we still dream of?
: The achievements are theirs, not mine. So it has nothing to do with me. Everyone shines in their own way.

Some people say that self-loathing essentially has nothing to do with the specific reason you think causes it. Whenever you look for a reason to hate yourself, you will always find one.
Do you agree?

No it cant. If this society put no rules and standards on humans, dont teach humans what is good and bad, the concept of self-acceptance won't exist. Imagining a parallel world lacking of food and energy, most people are of less use but waste food, under this circumstance, laziness could be an advantage for saving energy. Then those who are active and energetic need to seek self-acceptance to make peace with themselves other than who are lazy.

In our culture, we seldom talk about "Self-Acceptance", we only talk about "hard work", "perserverance", "success", "overcome the difficulty"...
