Introduction

In our daily lives, many of us feel the pressure to be productive all the time. We rush from one task to another, and even our free time can feel like another job. But learning to relax is not just about taking a break—it is about understanding what rest really means for you. Relaxation is not lazy or wasteful. It helps your mind and body recover, so you can think clearly and feel better. However, everyone relaxes differently. Some people need quiet time alone, while others feel refreshed after talking with friends. Some enjoy nature, music, or reading. The key is to discover what truly calms you, not what others say you should do. This week, let’s explore the meaning of relaxation, the obstacles that stop us from resting, and the small changes we can make to live a more balanced life. Remember, relaxing is a skill we can all learn, but it starts with changing how we think about rest.

1.      What does the word “relaxation” mean to you in your own life?

For me, that would be a status like that: no one bothers me and I can freely do whatever I wanna do, such as learning German, surfing Purasbar and etc.

1.      What does the word “relaxation” mean to you in your own life?

I think there're two kinds of relaxation: one is entertainment like streaming short videos or playing computer games; the other is literally doing nothing, a status where nothing races in my mind, which usually happens when I zone out in class or go for walk alone. However, the latter is rare in my life recently, for Senior 3' study deprive me of lots of spare time, and I spend the lessened leisure time on games or something like that, leaving me no time to do nothing.

2.      Why do many people feel guilty when they try to relax?

Because they THINK they would be sucessful if they wouldn't relax.

Another reason is the pressure from others, like a dedicated peer.

4.      Do you think modern technology helps or hurts our ability to relax? Why?

I think it hurts. Because the so-called relaxations produced by technology such as short videos actually makes me more tired. I admit that they do have benefits, but not helping relax.

5.      In your culture, is relaxing seen as a positive thing or a waste of time?

Definitely a waste in China. For example, my mother urged me to turn off the computer and go to bed immediately just now.

3.      Can you remember a time when you felt completely relaxed? What were you doing?

Actually I can't recall a time when I have such feeling, completely having nothing in my mind. It seems that I'm always occupied, by both study and entertainment.

However, if changing perspective -- to say the moment I felt peaceful, there're many of it: reading in the liberary, chatting with my close friends. But the former kind of "relaxation" is hard to find in my life recently. I don't mean that the former one is more important than the latter, but I do need time when I clear everything in my mind.

8.      If you had to teach someone who never relaxes how to start, what would be your first advice?

Don't pick up the phone immediately. Try zoning out first.

2.      Why do many people feel guilty when they try to relax?

Because some people are kidnapped by meritocracy. They think relaxation is a waste of time. Only something "meaningful" and "useful" is worthy to do. Something which cannot bring productivity should be avoided

Many people say they only feel anxious not peaceful when they scroll on the phone. Perhaps scrolling is not a good idea for relaxation

Yeah, at least in China many people (especially older people) take relaxing for a pure waste of time. Perhaps it stems from the lack of resources in their life time

6.      What is the difference between “resting” and “truly relaxing”?

I think “resting” is the process or behaviour when you want to relax. “Truly relaxing” is the result that you really refill yourself with the energy
