Hello, everyone, and welcome to this week’s Weekly Topic!

Friendship is one of the most beautiful and complex relationships we experience. A friend can be a mirror, a shield, or a lighthouse in the dark. But what happens when that light goes out?

This week, we are exploring a difficult but universal human experience: losing a friend.

However, "loss" doesn't always mean death. Sometimes, we lose friends to distance, to time, to misunderstandings, or simply to growing in different directions. How we handle these fractures—whether quiet or loud—says a lot about who we are.

So, let’s put our feelings into words. Whether you’ve grieved a friend who passed away, mourned a friendship that faded, or wrestled with letting go of a toxic bond, this is your space to share, reflect, and learn from each other.

Let’s dive in!

Subtopics & Discussion Questions

Subtopic 1: The Silent Drift – Losing a Friend to Time and Distance
Sometimes, there is no fight or drama. You just stop talking.
• Have you ever had a friend you were once inseparable from, but now you barely speak? What caused the distance?
• Do you believe in "friends for a reason, a season, or a lifetime"? Which category do most of your friendships fall into?
• If you could send a message to a long-lost friend right now, what would it say—and why haven't you sent it yet?
Subtopic 2: The Sharp Break – Losing a Friend to Betrayal or Conflict
When trust is broken, the loss is sudden and painful.
• Have you ever ended a friendship over a specific argument or betrayal? Looking back, do you think it could have been saved?
• Is it harder to forgive a friend than a family member? Why or why not?
• In your culture, is it common to have a direct "breakup" conversation with a friend, or do people usually just drift away silently?
Subtopic 3: The Ultimate Goodbye – Losing a Friend to Death
The heaviest form of loss.
• How do you think grief for a friend differs from grief for a family member? Is it often "overlooked" by society?
• If you have lost a friend, what is one small ritual or habit you keep to honor their memory (e.g., listening to their favorite song, visiting a specific place)?
• What advice would you give to someone who is currently watching a friend struggle with a terminal illness?
Subtopic 4: The Toxic Release – Choosing to Lose a Friend for Your Own Well-being
Sometimes, walking away is an act of self-care, not cruelty.
• How do you know when a friendship has become toxic and it's time to let go?
• Do you owe an "explanation" when you cut someone off, or is silence a valid exit strategy?
• Have you ever been the one who was "cut off"? How did you handle that rejection?
Subtopic 5: The Aftermath – Healing and Moving Forward
What do we do with the space they left behind?
• Do you believe you can ever truly replace a lost friend, or does every friend occupy a unique, irreplaceable spot in your heart?
• What lessons have your hardest friendship losses taught you about how you treat the friends you still have?
• If you met your lost friend again five years from now, what would you hope they would say to you?

I had a very close friend in my primary school and we kept in contact even when we entered different middle schools. However,  our relationship got distant after we went to a same high school.  I think the main reason is our different personalities and preferences,  which makes our common topics less.

Yes. It could be saved if more communication had been done.

How do you know when a friendship has become toxic and it's time to let go?

When I try to please that friend even when he/she hates me.
