Welcome to this week’s English Club Weekly Topic! A predicament is a difficult situation that is hard to escape. But what happens when we know it will last a long time? We cannot simply wait for a quick fix. We must find ways to live, cope, plan, and maybe even grow while the storm continues. This week, let’s talk about what we do in long-term difficult situations. How do we keep going? How do we ask for help? How do we stay hopeful without denying reality? Share your thoughts, strategies, and stories—only what you are comfortable sharing. Please remember: English only, be kind, and respect everyone’s privacy. There are no perfect answers, only honest conversation.

Have you ever faced a difficult situation that you knew would last a long time? Share only if you feel comfortable.

I had taken the OI (Olympic information,  mainly about coding and algorithm) competition in my senior high. Though I had been trained for years I did badly in it and often ranked last in the contest. failure, disappointment, and jealousy towards my classmates haunted me almost every day, especially right before the provincal contest came and I paused studies in the school and lived in the intensive training camp. It lasted until  Grade 2 when I eventually finished my last contest and retired.
It seems the impact never fades : I always think my talent in coding is very low.

啊啊是谁都对:Welp... if I think so, your major in university also contains programming courses. How do you thinks others' talents in coding?

Knowing in advance wouldn't make things easier, but it can mean better preparation and less regret if we decide to go through the predicament.

啊啊是谁都对:I think so!

• How can we stay hopeful without ignoring reality?

By my experience I maintain hope mainly by setting the bad memory thought out of my mind.  But perhaps there are more methods that are more positive.

啊啊是谁都对:For example, predict the worst scenario and just tell yourself "things won't go worse like that" ?

lizhenxuan:No I won't even picture the worst scene in my mind. The future is unpredictable,  which means things can be more terrible than my worst vision.

• How do you prepare for a future that feels uncertain?

Before I find the right way I firmly believe I will do as others do and try keeping a positive mindset every day.

• What should we avoid saying to someone who is suffering?

do not tell them that there are people who suffer more than them,  which would only make them feel guilty,  said my psychology teacher.

• How do you break a huge difficulty into smaller, manageable steps?

By using AI. Usually I use "interview-me skill" and tell AI my needs, goals and conditiions. Then AI will ask you to let you further clarify your needs.
