Character Details

The free and rebellious eldest daughter of the Landau family. Once a close friend of Cocolia's, she is now a mechanic purely because she likes this job.
In the Everwinter-stricken Belobog, she opened a workshop called "Neverstop" that puts business on hold from time to time for outdoor rock 'n' roll performances.
And should anyone ask her about the workshop's profits... "This is just a hobby, dear. I'm not short on money."

"I'd like you not to gloss over my identity like that... I, Serval Landau, am no one's accessory."

"...Oh, there's nothing else afterward? Okay. Let me chip in then: If something's broken, drop into the Neverwinter Workshop in the Administrative District to see me, any time."
"What's that, you wanna hear some rock'n'roll [sic]? Well, that's even better — drop into our Neverwinter Workshop in the Administrative District to rock this city — with Mechanical Fever!"

Serval Landau owns a piece of land in the heart of Belobog's Administrative District — the Neverwinter Workshop — where she in theory makes a living from her mechanical repairs.

But to be more precise, almost all of this genius mechanic's time is spent repairing and making improvements to various musical instruments...

"Tsk, don't pay any attention to that magazine! I'm a reputable business owner..."
"From geomarrow radiators to car engines — or even a Silvermane automaton — it's no trouble at all. As well as maintenance and renovations of ordinary appliances, I also provide a modding service."
"Like fitting an external drill bit to a snowplow, or a ballistic trajectory calculator to a toaster... That kinda stuff."

"Ah? You want to know how's business going? Hey, don't ask so many questions — you know I like to fool around with music in my spare time."
"Anyway, I never planned on making a fortune... Life's too short. Why not plunge yourself into your hobbies?"

Serval was able to rekindle her passion for music after cutting off all connections with her family.

This led to her prestigious workshop becoming a base for her to rock out — despite suffering constant complaints, this cutting-edge art style from before the Eternal Freeze is still sought out by hordes of hipster kids...

"Oh, I give up! Can you trashy tabloids and your so-called "music critics" focus on what's important, please? 'Suffering constant complaints'... 'hipster kids'... My fans and I would dispute that!"
"But I suppose it's true that Mechanical Fever is popular with youths — at that age, kids are either full of enthusiasm or are underappreciated..."
"No matter what your mood is, you always have to vent sometimes. And rocking out with me just so happens to be the best way of doing that!"

In days gone by, everyone knew that Serval Landau was the smartest out of all the Silvermane Guards — 80% of the rumors about the talented elder daughter of the Landaus are based around this fact.

However those rumors were almost instantly replaced by a new piece of gossip a few years ago. Why was she, who had always been close with the Supreme Guardian, being fired from the armed forces with no prior warning? Does Serval hold a grudge about it? Everyone has their own theory.

"The answer to the first question is simple: 'No comment.' This is the Silvermane Guards's top secret. I hope you understand."
"And as for the second question..."

"I... I don't give two hoots. Think about it. Is there anything better than living out a justifiably leisurely life? I prefer to say that woman helped me out — I really owe her a debt!"
"In this world, it's better to enjoy the present moment... No, who am I kidding."

她不知自己是自何時起迷失了方向。她只是走，在黑夜中不停地走，追趕著太陽和月亮，一遍又一遍，直到倒下。

她想起初入大學時的模樣，想起自己選擇的專業——星際航行動力學，而現在，她正躺在泥濘的道路上。

她抬頭看向星空，此時她望見流星，一條，兩條，三..然後是許多細小的，絢爛的，明明滅滅的光芒，最後，壯麗的烈光撕裂了黑夜。

她的四肢拖著身體前進，領她來到陸地的盡頭，海洋的起點，-道海岸線，潮水推搡著她，就像潮水對待擱淺的列車那樣，孤零零的，像是迷路了。

她走進它，見舷窗外的風景開始變換。列車向她展示了無數瑰麗陸離的世界。它們很遠，在故鄉之外，他們很近，乘著列車便能到達。

她嘗試著修複列車，它短暫地啟動，但足以帶她掠過故鄉的上空。她一眼就看到了回家的路，從高空看來，回程近在咫尺，連故鄉的海都如此微不足道。

Character Story: Part I

The girl is lost.

She can't remember when she became lost. She just walked and walked, on and on into the dark night, chasing the sun and the moon, over and over again — until she falls.

She remembers what she looked like as a college freshman, remembers her chosen major — interstellar travel dynamics — and now she's lying face down in the mud.

She looks up to the stars, and just then sees meteors streaming down: one, two, three... And then more, smaller ones, flickering and flashing ever so finely before a magnificent blaze tore open the night.

Her limbs drag her forward, leading her on to where the land meets the ocean. At the shoreline, the waters jostle against her like how the tide treats that stranded Express, alone and lost.

She walks in and see the scenery outside beginning to change. The Express shows her a myriad of magnificent worlds. They are faraway, beyond her homeworld, yet also close enough to be a simple train ride.

She tries to repair the Express. It starts up only briefly, but it is enough to skid across the sky of her home. She immediately sees the path home. From that altitude, the journey is so short, and even the ocean of her homeworld appears so insignificant.

It asked her whether she'd like to travel together. She wonders what kind of journey that would be.

"A journey to the beginning."
"Let's go then." Without hesitation, the girl replied, "Just as you brought me home, so would I take you home, too."

姬子有一個手提箱。

手提箱是她的寶庫。以前，其中裝滿了維修列車的各種工具，她靠著它們將列車修葺一新；現在，其中多了一把單分子鋸、一顆逃逸的衛星，還有數不勝數的其他機巧——它們是她奇想的具現，是她步履不歇的證明。

沒有哪位旅伴比她的旅行箱更忠實。列車上的旅客來來去去，就連那位「列車長」或許也不能從始至終陪伴她與列車。

但她不在意。就像她不在意那個裝腔作勢的金髮男人不告而別，就像她不在意那過於遙遠的故鄉和故人。

她明白這趟旅程是孤獨的。就算她能在旅行中結識志同道合的旅伴，就算她受盡旅伴慷慨恩惠，就算她能與旅伴一同見證某段旅途的終點——那也不過是她足夠僥倖罷了。

她明白這趟旅程是孤獨的。任何人都無法踏足與他人完全相同的行跡。任何人都無法代他人體驗沿途所見的風景。她能夠依靠的只有自己的雙眼與雙腳。

然後，她會將那雙眼見證的一切光景，還有那雙腳履行的一切足跡，全部裝進自己的手提箱中。  

Character Story: Part II

Himeko has a suitcase.

This suitcase is her treasure trove. Previously, she'd filled it with all kinds of train repair tools to fix up the Express. But now, it's packed with a molecular saw, an escaped satellite, and countless other contraptions — the embodiment of her whims and the proof of her resolute will.

No travel companion is more faithful to her than this suitcase. Passengers come and go on the Express, and perhaps not even "the conductor" would be able to accompany her and the Express from start to finish.

But she doesn't care. She didn't care when that pretentious blond man left without saying goodbye, just like how she didn't care about her distant homeworld and old friends.

She knows that this journey is lonely. Even if she could get to know like-minded travel companions, even if they showed her generous grace, even if she could witness the end of a complete journey with those companions — that's all just a momentary fluke.

She knows that this journey is lonely. Nobody can follow in the exact same footsteps as anyone else. Nobody can experience for someone else everything that happens along a journey. All she can rely on are her own two eyes and feet.

That's why she stores inside her suitcase all the sights her eyes have witnessed, and all the footprints her feet have left behind.
